Traveling the Beartooth Highway

Sunday, June 12th

This morning we left Red Lodge at around 8AM to travel the 68 mile Beartooth Highway to the northeast entrance to Yellowstone. The first problem we encountered was a dead GPS!!  We were OK today and will be until we leave Yellowstone as there is only one way to go.

From the rarefied heights of Montana’s alpine tundra to the thirsty soils of Wyoming’s High Plains desert, this spectacular drive winds through some of the most beautiful and varied landscapes of the Yellowstone region.

The highway had just opened and at the top there was walls of snow/ice up to 18 feet on each side of the road.  Bearfoot Pass is at a height of 10,947 feet.  We met some locals at one of the view points, and he told us he had never seen so much snow on the highway in his life (and he was old)….so much for global warming!!

As with everything we have seen on this trip…AWESOME
